West Highland White Terrier Breed History
Translated from English, the name of the breed, which is sometimes affectionately called "lead", sounds almost romantic: a white terrier from the western hills.

These dogs appeared not by chance. In the UK, hunting for burrowing animals was very popular, however, when red terriers appeared from a hole, they were often mistaken for foxes and mistakenly shot. Therefore, the Scottish family Malcolm decided to breed small white terriers.
The basic requirements for the breed were the same as for their relatives in more ordinary shades: squat, anger towards the object of hunting and hard coat, which protected from dampness and cold.
Later, Colonel Malcolm took up the breeding of white terriers, at the end of the 19th century he introduced the pets to the public. Since the city of Poltalloch was their homeland, the terriers themselves at that time were called "Poltalloch." They became the basis for the formation of the West Highland White Terrier breed.
In 1904, West Highland White Terriers were recognized by the English Kennel Club. Before that, they were presented at the exhibitions as Scottish Terriers, Cairn Terriers or Sky Terriers.
And in 1905, English and Scottish clubs were organized lovers of West Highland White Terriers. Later they created a third club - in Nordirland, it was he who began to occupy a leading position in breeding. Efforts were directed not only at maintaining exterior features, but also at the appropriate temperament and behavior. The standard was adopted, which until now has practically not changed.
During World War I, breeding was suspended, but most dogs were kept - the owners showed true miracles of heroism. People starved themselves, but managed to share a lean ration with their pets.
In the 80s of the 20th century, the breed reaches its peak of popularity in Europe. There is a fashion for dogs, which could not but have a detrimental effect on the quality of the breed. To meet the growing demand for breeding, dogs with problems, including health, were allowed. Conscientious breeders had to make a titanic effort to rectify the situation.
Today, the West Highland White Terrier is basically a family favorite, not a gambling hunter. But they kept the ardor and anger towards the beast in full. "News" is extremely popular not only in the UK, but also in the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Germany, France, Australia and other countries.
